Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i’s 2027 presidential bid has received a timely boost.
On Monday, Youth of Luo Nyanza declared their support for his candidature, setting the tone for his campaign plans ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Addressing the press at a Kisumu hotel, the youth led by their convener Omolo Odanga said the country stands at a crossroads, terming Matiang’i as the only man capable of correcting the ills committed by the current administration.
“Our country stands at a crossroads,” Odanga declared.
“Unemployment is rising, public trust is collapsing, and the state grows more arrogant by the day. The nation is crying out - not just for change - but for bold, disciplined, and effective leadership.”
During anti-finance bill protests in 2024 spearheaded by the Gen-Zs, Odanga said, the young people expressed unwavering support for Matiang’i, because of his ‘his fix it’ mentality.
Matiang’i held various ministerial portfolios in retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, Odanga insisting that he set standards never seen before.
“Dr. Matiang’i’s track record speaks volumes. In the ICT Ministry, he introduced digital systems that continue to empower the youth. In Education, he restored order, fairness, and integrity. At the Ministry of Interior, he protected the country with firm, principled leadership. He didn’t make noise - he delivered results that proved beneficial to the citizenry.”
His sentiments received the backing of Brenda Elizabeth, adding that their support for Matiang’i isn’t a departure from Luo Nyanza’s proud political legacy.
“Let us be clear: supporting Dr. Matiang’i is not a departure from our region’s proud political legacy, it is its continuation. The time for blind loyalty is over. The time for results has come,” she added.
Luo Nyanza comprises of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay and Migori Counties.
On allegations that the former CS is a ‘project’ of Kenyatta, Odanga said the retired President, like any other Kenyan voter, is free to back any presidential candidate he deems fit.
“He is a Kenyan and has the right to spurt any candidate he wants. That doesn’t make the candidacy of Dr. Matiang’i illegal,” he stated.
They rallied the people of Luo Nyanza behind Matiang’i, urging them to ‘rise above old political scripts and seize the future with bold clarity.’
