The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) this week arrested sergeant Gilbert Kiama Oduor, attached to Kisumu Mamboleo Police Post, for allegedly soliciting and receiving a bribe of Sh15,000.

Oduor’s arrest came after EACC commenced investigations upon receiving a report that the officer was demanding a bribe from a complainant, whose kin had been taken into custody on allegations of possessing bhang.

Investigations established that police officers from Mamboleo Police Post, led by the area chief, raided the home of one John Oluoch, after receiving a tip-off that he was “in possession of bhang.”

Although no contraband was recovered, Oluoch was arrested and booked at the police post on January 23, 2026.

It is alleged that Oluoch’s kin was referred to sergeant Oduor, who demanded the bribe to ensure that the suspect is not be taken to court to answer the alleged bhang possession charges.

The complainant subsequently reported the matter to the Commission, where further investigations established that officers from Mamboleo Police Post had directed Oluoch, while in custody, to solicit bribe money from relatives.

On January 28, 2026, the Commission conducted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect at the Winam Law Courts as he received the Sh15,000 bribe from the complainant.

The suspect was booked at the Railways and Ports Police Station, processed, and later released on bond pending conclusion of investigations.

The Commission cautioned public officers engaging in corrupt practices to desist and reiterated its commitment to eradicate bribery at public service delivery points, in order to improve access to quality services for all citizens.
