A somber mood engulfed Kokwanyo, Karachuonyo in Homabay County on Friday afternoon, during the burial of teacher cum blogger, Albert Omondi Ojwang.
Ojwang died on June 07, 2025 at the Central Police Station in Nairobi, hours after being picked up by police officers over an alleged post he made on social media, touching on the security of Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General of Police.
Addressing mourners during the burial ceremony that was characterized by anti-government chants and slogans, Nevnina Onyango, Albert’s widow thanked Kenyans for standing with her family, since the loss of her husband in controversial circumstances.
Albert, Nevnina said, was born on July 07 and was expected to mark his 32nd birthday on Monday next week.
He urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers on July 7, “to celebrate Albert’s life and push for justice” of his death.
Activists across the country have planned for anti-government protests on July 7, marked as Saba Saba Day against police brutality, “state sponsored abductions” and other forms of human rights violations against Kenyans.
Upon being arrested from his father’s home, Albert was reportedly briefly detained at Mawego Police Station, before being driven to Nairobi where he met his brutal and untimely death.
Residents torched the station on Thursday, as his body was being taken home for burial, from Nairobi.
Present during the burial, Homabay governor Gladys Wanga pledged to closely monitor the ongoing investigation into Albert’s death, to ensure justice for his family, adding that there is no room for delay in delivery of justice.
"Justice must not just be done, justice must be seen to be done. Justice delayed is justice denied," said Wanga.
Several police officers and civilians among them Samson Talaam, former Nairobi Central Police Officer Commanding Station (OCS) have already been charged in court.
“Those police who have been charged in court, we will follow up to see that they are charged with murder and convicted to hang,” Wanga said.
The governor conveyed condolence messages from President William Ruto, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
