Kisumu county now has a state-of-the-art waste collection truck.

The truck, a game changer for Kisumu city's sanitation efforts, is a 290-horsepower “beast that can haul up to 15 tons of waste at once,” according to governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.

“That's the equivalent of four regular garbage trucks, which means we'll be saving on operational costs and making our waste collection process much more efficient,” Nyong’o said during the truck’s commissioning on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Its features include being equipped with a safety cabin to minimize human contact with waste and an on-board compressor, designed to prevent spillage and odors.

Nyong’o noted that the truck was designed to ensure streets stay clean and litter-free during transportation.

The initiative, he said, is part of his administration’s commitment to a greener Kisumu.

“We've already established 14 waste separation and recovery centers and installed waste bins throughout the city to keep our environment clean and safe for everyone.”

Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga noted that the vehicle has a safety cabin and integrated compressor system, engineered to redefine urban sanitation by enhancing operational efficiency and curbing environmental contamination.

“It signifies a transformative leap in our relentless quest for ecological sustainability and metropolitan hygiene,” said the CM.

The truck’s commissioning comes days after Nyong’o’s administration announced a Sh10.6 billion investment for the Lake Victoria West Water and Sanitation (LVWATSAN) program.

The funding, managed by the LVWATSAN and implemented by the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) will spearhead crucial upgrades to thousands of homes.

The program aims to provide water to an additional 25,000 households and connect 1,700 more households to the sewerage network in Kisumu.

Similarly, it will ensure 4,968 affordable housing units in Lumumba, Makasembo, and the proposed LV Marina at Otonglo have water and sewerage access.

Further, LVWATSAN focuses on reducing water loss to 28% to boost KIWASCO's financial stability and strengthen key institutions.
