Construction and upgrade work at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu is expected to start proper next week, following the official handover of the stadium to the contractors.

The Sh800 million development project is projected to be completed within 10-12 months, reflecting a strong partnership between the national and the county government of Kisumu.

Addressing the press during the brief handover ceremony on Thursday morning, Beatrice Odongo, Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) of sports, gender, culture and youth affairs said Kisumu teams that have been using the stadium for training and matches have sought alternative venues for their activities.

The teams are now using Kisumu Day High School grounds and the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, in Mamboleo, among other pitches for training and hosting home matches.

“The project will deliver a modern 10,000-seater high-standard stadium, complete with an 8 lane athletics track that meets international requirements,” the CECM said.

“It is being implemented by a contractor engaged by the national government and supervised by the Ministry of Defence, with completion expected within 12 months, while engaging local residents to create jobs and livelihood for our people.”

The event was attended by among others, Ministry of Defence representatives Lt. Col. P. Githehu and Major E.O. Obwor, and contractors Zain Khan (Royal Concrete) and Michael Li (CRBC) alongside other county officials.

“We have already started the mobilisation of equipment. From Monday, we will be out in full force for the construction,” said Khan.

Kondele Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Daniel Ogechi assured contractors of security during the entire construction period.

“Kisumu is a very nice place to live and work. Just ensure that locals, through their representatives, get opportunities to work and earn something from here. We will be here to provide security so that you seamlessly go about your duties,” the OCS said.

Cabinet Secretary (CS) for defence Soipan Tuya presided over groundbreaking of the stadium’s construction in December 2025, in a ceremony attended by Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o among other dignitaries.
