The national government is spearheading the construction of Moi stadium in Kisumu, into a modern sports facility.

Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony for the 10,000-seater stadium on Thursday morning, Cabinet Secretary (CS) for defence Roselinder Soipan Tuya said its is now clear to all and sundry that the government is committed to nurturing talent, promoting sports excellence, and investing in facilities that empower youth.

Upon completion, she said, the stadium will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including roofed Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern pavilions; a football pitch constructed to FIFA and CAF standards; eight-lane athletics running track with a tartan finish compliant with World Athletics standards; as well as associated mechanical, electrical, and civil works, including fencing and adequate parking facilities.

“This facility will serve as a vital hub for sports development, providing a platform for young athletes to identify, nurture, and showcase their talents, while competing at national, regional, and international levels. It will also contribute significantly to community cohesion and healthy lifestyles,” she said, adding that it will be constructed by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) under CRBC contractors under CRBC contractors, a Chinese firm.

The project, she said, forms part of the government’s broader national agenda to modernise sports infrastructure across the country as a catalyst for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic growth.

“Beyond its sporting value, the stadium is expected to generate employment opportunities, stimulate local economic activity, and position Kisumu County as a key destination for sports tourism.”

The minister’s host, Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said Moi has been a cradle of legends, a home of dreams for many and an avenue for livelihoods for countless families.

“This stadium is no longer just a place to horn football talent; it is becoming the foundation of economic growth for Kisumu County,” he noted.

The stadium is expected to be constructed in a period of one year.
