Over 4,000 needy university and college students have benefited from the Kisumu Central National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) tertiary bursary disbursement, in a move geared toward easing the burden of fees.
According to David Juma, Secretary, Kisumu Central NG-CDF bursary committee, the Sh22,311,025 disbursement goes to 4,200 university and college students who made their applications during the 2024/2025 financial year.
“Upon receiving the applications, we got into a thorough verification process before settling on much deserving cases,” said Juma, who doubles up as the Kenya National Union (KNUT) Kisumu city branch executive committee member.
He spoke on the sidelines of the cheque collection exercise at the Kisumu Central NG-CDF offices in Tom Mboya estate, on Friday, January 9, 2026.
Up next, Juma said, is the opening of the bursary application process for learners joining grade 10 from next week, urging parents and guardians to play their roles effectively as far as having their children in school is concerned.
“We just would like to encourage the parents that they also need to play their part,” he said, adding that they are not receiving new applications for education sponsorship, since Kisumu Central Member of Parliament (MP) Joshua Oron’s first term in office is ending in 2027.
“We are only sponsoring learners currently ongoing with their education. We don’t know who will come next after our patron (Oron) exits office in 2027.”
The first term legislature is angling for Kisumu County’s gubernatorial seat, to succeed governor Anyang’ Nyong’o whose second term ends in 2027.
Betty Omakada, one of the parents who attended the cheque collection event confirmed that she received Sh9,000 for her daughter’s fee.
“My daughter is a student at the Cooperative university undertaking a course in public relations. I have just received a cheque worth Sh9,000 to pay her fees. I am very grateful,” said the elated parent who indicated that it was her second time getting support from the Kisumu Central NG-CDF.
On her part, Mary Daraja, a first-year student at Chuka university pursuing bachelor of education (science) appreciated the support, calling on the MP and the bursary committee to continue extending funding to needy learners in Kisumu Central.
