East Africa’s asset financier, Mogo, on Monday reiterated its commitment to supporting boda boda operators in Western Kenya.
Speaking during the reopening of the refurbished Kisumu County Boda Boda office in Kisumu East, Margaret Waithaka, Mogo Kenya’s regional manager for Nyanza said the company continues to empower riders through financial literacy training, responsible borrowing education, and community programs geared toward addressing social challenges such as teen pregnancies.
“Mogo has always been at the heart of supporting boda boda operators; not only by helping them acquire motorcycles at affordable prices and access flexible loans, but also by actively contributing to their social and economic wellbeing,” she said.
Mogo stepped in to support the riders, after their offices were recently brought down by fire in a reported arson incident.
The incident disrupted the daily operations of hundreds of riders who rely on the facility for coordination, dispute resolution, welfare services, and administrative support.
The asset financier fully funded the renovation of the office, ensuring it was furnished and ready for seamless resumption of services.
Reopening of the office went in tandem with a tree-planting exercise and a free motorcycle service clinic, with Bajaj company, Mogo’s partner donating a brand-new motorcycle to the County Boda Boda chairman, Jacob Ochieng Ogambo.
“We are very happy,” said Ogambo, who confirmed that they reached out to Mogo to fund the rebuilding exercise and furnishing of the office.
Boda boda is a vital sector in Kenya’s economy. Reports indicate that the sector generates approximately Sh660 billion annually, accounting for 4.4% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The sector provides employment to over 2.5 million across the country.
