Several Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) aspirants on Wednesday visited the union offices to collect their nomination papers, officially setting the stage for a competitive election process across various positions.
Teachers aligned to KUPPET will go to the polls on January 10, 2026, to elect their new leaders across the country.
Among those who picked their forms was Elkana Ongaya, the Secondary Schools Executive Secretary aspirant in Vihiga County. Ongaya confirmed that he has successfully obtained his nomination papers after paying the required Sh50,000, marking a key step in his bid to lead and represent secondary school teachers within the county.
Speaking after the exercise, Ongaya said the decision to join the race was driven by his desire to strengthen teachers’ welfare, improve dialogue between educators and the employer, and push for better working conditions.
He emphasised that the union needs leaders who are accessible, transparent, and committed to defending the rights of teachers at all levels.
“I have officially received my nomination papers, and I am fully ready for this journey. I urge my fellow teachers to stand with me and support my candidature. Together, we can build a stronger KUPPET that listens to the needs of teachers,” Ongaya stated.
He further highlighted key issues affecting teachers, including delayed promotions, stagnation, inadequate staffing in schools, and the need for improved medical coverage. Ongaya promised that if elected, he will give priority to consistent engagement with teachers and ensure their voices are represented effectively in all decision-making forums.
Other aspirants across different positions also collected their forms, signaling the beginning of active campaigns ahead of the upcoming elections.
The KUPPET office confirmed that the nomination process is ongoing and encouraged all interested candidates to meet the required guidelines and deadlines.
Teachers across Vihiga County are expected to carefully evaluate aspirants based on their track record, leadership skills, and commitment to addressing the challenges facing the profession as election activities intensify in the coming days.
