Thirty (30) coaches on Monday began their Confederation of African Football (CAF) C coaching course in Buruburu, Nairobi.

According to Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the month-long course is led by CAF instructors George Mwangi and former Harambee Stars captain, Musa Otieno.

Among the participants are former Gor Mahia players Edwin Lavatsa and Ali Hassan, Mathare’s Paul Ochieng, and KCB’s Bethwell Warambo.

The ex-players are eager to leverage their experience to support budding talent in Kenyan football.

Lavatsa is currently serving as assistant coach for the National Super League (NSL) side Kibera Black Stars.

“It was my exit plan to transition from playing to coaching because from my playing experience I felt like when I coach maybe I will do better FKF has provided us a platform to get the knowledge that we need to help progress football and will also help me fulfil my objective in coaching,” he told FKF.

He was appointed Kibera Black Stars second assistant coach in February, 2024.

The team’s Secretary General Eugene Ochieng said that the former Gor Mahia forward was roped in to handle the strikers who they felt were misfiring.

“Our strikers are finding it hard and we thought of a seasoned guy who will sharpen their blades and that’s how we landed on Lavatsa,” Ochieng said during the former striker’s appointment.

During his heydays, Lavatsa featured for Kakamega Homeboys, Gor Mahia, Mathare United and Bandari FC.

He also had a professional stint with MC Alger of Algeria.

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, Harambee Stars were beaten 2-0 by South Sudan in Juba in the first leg of the opening round of the qualifiers.

Second half goals were enough for the Bright Stars to pick an important win in their quest to qualify for a first ever senior continental showpiece.

Ezbon Malish opened the scoring in the 50th minute before midfielder Yohanna Juba completed the victory in the 68th minute.

The fixture doesn’t have a big bearing on Harambee Stars, given the fact that Kenya will host the 2025 CHAN tournament, alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Simply put, Kenya is using the qualifiers as a training ground for preparations ahead of the soccer bonanza.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is set to align its coaching pathway with the new CAF coaching convention.

These changes, which will come into effect in January 2025, aim to streamline coach development from grassroots to elite football, ensuring a more focused, efficient, and progressive system.

This new structure addresses gaps in the current framework, offering clearer progression opportunities while aligning with international standards.

Coaches will now follow a structured and detailed pathway that includes mandatory practice periods and refresher courses to ensure they remain up-to-date with the latest global trends.

The revamped pathway begins with the FKF Introductory certificate, designed to equip aspiring coaches with foundational skills for grassroots football.

This 60-hour course focuses on basic coaching principles, providing the building blocks for a career in football coaching.

FKF D Diploma

The FKF D Diploma focuses on youth football, which is seen as the backbone of long-term football success. This 80-hour program has been significantly enhanced to prepare coaches working with youth and grassroots teams.

CAF D License

The CAF D License is the entry-level course for coaches focused on grassroots and youth football. The 10-day course is followed by a mandatory one-year coaching practice period before coaches can progress to the CAF C License.

CAF C Licence

The CAF C License requires a minimum of two months of coursework, followed by at least a two-year practice period before advancing to the CAF B License.

CAF B License

The CAF B License course runs for a minimum of four months, and coaches must complete a one-year practice period before progressing to the CAF A License.

CAF A Licence

The CAF A License is a high-level coaching. It spans at least six months, with a mandatory three-year practice period before qualifying for the prestigious CAF Pro License.

CAF Pro License

The CAF Pro License is the highest level of coaching certification, reserved for elite football coaches. To qualify, coaches must have three years of practice at the CAF A level.

This new structure provides a clear, direct progression from youth football coaching to elite, professional management, ensuring that coaches continuously develop their skills and remain at the forefront of the game.

Regular updates and specialised courses will also be introduced to ensure continuous professional development.
