Several sporting activities have in recent times been witnessed in the country down from ward levels, with both politicians and other sport enthusiasts organizing the tournaments.

In Seme, Kisumu County, among notable tournaments organized during the December school holiday included the Nyawaseka Football Cup and Mkenya Super Cup, that brought together young players from across the Sub-County.

Nyawaseka Cup, sponsored by Dr. Nobert Ragwari ended with different teams being crowned champions in various categories.

In the U14 category, Rodi FC trounced Awanya FC to emerge winners as Runda FC thrashed Nang'a FC in the U17 bracket, whereas Awanya bounced back, beating Runda in the senior’s category.

"We are doing this to bring our youth together, promote social cohesion and harmonious interaction among them," stated Dr. Ragwari.

On the other hand, Mkenya Super Cup held courtesy of Hillary Mkenya saw Kit-Mikayi FC beat Awanya FC 7-6 via post-match penalties, after a 1-1 draw during the final staged at Kit-Mikayi Primary School.

Runda FC beat Jupiter FC 4-3 to finish third, after the third playoff match ended 0-0.

The tourney was graced by among others, former Harambee Stars, AFC Leopards, Tusker FC and Kakamega Homeboyz striker Allan Wanga.

Wanga said the initiative was mainly aimed at nurturing young talents.

"I must commend my good friend Hillary for coming up with this idea mainly to scout and nurture the untapped potentials hidden in our locality," averred Wanga.

On his part, Hillary revealed that he had in mind that such an initiative would promote peace among the locals.

"We have done this to enhance peace, nurture talents and champion for social cohesion among our people," stated Mkenya.

The main theme of the two tournaments that brought together nearly 15 teams emphasised on nurturing talents, and carrying out sensitization on the significance of unity among people.

Local tournaments held across the country include Oguso Super Cup, Stephen Letoo Super Cup, Cleo Malala Super Cup 6th edition, and the 3rd edition of Moody Tournament in Baringo among others.

As schools reopen next week, term one games are expected where more nurturing and scouting of talents will be undertaken.
