Kisumu City management, through City Manager (CM) Michael Abala Wanga has begun public engagement forums with traders and members of the public at large, in a bid to enhance service delivery in satellite urban centres.
The move by the city management comes in the wake of Kisumu governor Anyang' Nyong'o, having transferred more functions to the CM’s office, as a strategy to elaborately plan for the well-being of Kisumu residents, as the city continues to experience shifts and turns in growth.
Speaking on Monday during his tour of Chiga market, the plan targets markets, drainage systems, street lighting, road rehabilitation, and flood mitigation measures in flood prone areas, among other improvement mechanisms.
“This area has been zoned as one of the city’s growth zones. I came here to look at how we will effectively implement the new city geospatial plan,” said the CM.
Chiga, Wanga added, is one of the areas in Kisumu that urgently need various amenities, including a modern market.
“We need a market here; we need a bus park and a demarcated urban area for its growth. Our surveyors will come, first to survey the land for the market and then the county will put a bigger market here,” he noted.
Chiga is one of several flood prone areas in Kisumu County. Wanga said they will deal with the drainage system in the area, in order to prevent flooding.
City Manager’s meet the people tours across Kisumu are meant to serve as avenues for collecting views, so as to ensure that implementation of the geospatial plans does not face resistance.
