Ugandan marathoner Rebecca Cheptegei is dead.

She died while receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, after her former boyfriend doused her in petrol and set her on fire in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County on Sunday.

The Ugandan Athletics Federation (UAF) confirmed her death in a post on X.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace,” said the Federation.

The 33-year-old was part of the Uganda marathon team during the just concluded 2024 Paris Olympic Games, in France. She finished 44th in the women's marathon.

Cheptegei was reportedly returning from church with her two children when she was attacked.

The alleged attacker also sustained serious burns, and is still admitted at MTRH.

Cheptegei, from across the border in Uganda, is said to have bought a piece of land in Trans Nzoia County and built a house, to be near Kenya's many athletic training centres.

The athlete and her estranged boyfriend had allegedly been wrangling over the piece of land.

The Kenyan government had mooted plans of airlifting her to Nairobi, for further medical attention.

National Assembly Speaker, Moses Wetang’ula was among the first leaders to share his condolence message.

“I join fellow Kenyans, Ugandans, and all who knew and loved Rebecca Cheptegei in mourning her tragic passing. As a remarkable athlete, her spirit and dedication inspired so many. While we honour her memory, we also recognize the gravity of the circumstances surrounding her loss, and we trust the ongoing investigation will bring justice swiftly,” said the former Bungoma Senator.

Joseph Cheptegei, the late athlete’s father, said he hopes justice will be served.
