The county government of Kisumu has confirmed an outbreak of acute watery diarrhea, with laboratory tests identifying Vibrio cholerae as a primary cause.
The outbreak first detected on March 19, 2025 at the Ahero County Hospital, has resulted in 15 reported cases, 6 confirmed cholera infections and 3 deaths.
Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Medical Services, Public Health and Sanitation, Dr. Gregory Ganda has assured members of the public that swift measures have been put in place to curb spread.
“The county government of Kisumu remains committed to protecting public health and will continue to provide regular updates on the situation. We appreciate the public’s cooperation in adhering to preventive measures and supporting our response efforts,” he said in a statement seen by this writer.
Affected areas, Ganda added, are under intensified surveillance, with rapid response teams deployed and laboratory testing expanded.
To prevent further spread, authorities are urging residents to boil drinking water, practice proper sanitation and seek medical attention if any symptoms arise.
The CECM said the emergency Operation Centre has been activated, and public health officials are enforcing hygiene compliance across the county.
He called for vigilance, urging residents of Kisumu to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility or via the toll-free emergency hotline.
