The national U20 team, Rising Stars opened their AFCON U20 CECAFA qualifiers campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania in Group A.

The match, played at the KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, showcased Kenya’s resilience and determination as the team secured their first three points of the competition.

The breakthrough came early in the 23rd minute when Kevin Wanganya unleashed a superb free kick from just outside the box.

The well-placed strike sailed past Tanzania’s goalkeeper, giving Kenya a well-deserved lead.

This moment of brilliance boosted the team’s confidence, but despite continued pressure from the team, Kenya went into halftime with only a one-goal advantage.

The second half saw Kenya extend their lead. In the 67th minute, Andres Odhiambo delivered a stunning long-range shot that doubled the Rising Stars’ advantage, making it 2-0.

However, Tanzania quickly responded in the 76th minute when Rahim Mkinyange found the back of the net, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

Despite late pressure from Tanzania, Kenya’s defence remained solid, and they held on to claim a vital win.

The coach Salim Babu led team now shifts focus to their next fixture against Rwanda on October 10, 2024, at KMC Stadium, with a 4:00 pm kickoff.

Sudan and Djibouti are the other teams in group A. Sudan beat Djibouti 3-1 in another group A encounter.
