Homabay County Commissioner Moses Lilan and governor Gladys Wanga have set an ambitious target of 1 million new registrations to the Social Health Authority (SHA), within 10 days.

With a population of 1.3 million people, Lilan said only 119,00o people had voluntarily registered with the new health scheme, after transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The administrator said they will employ a multi-agency approach that will rope in Community Health Workers (CHWs), so as to meet the target.

“We have deployed our infrastructure, we want to employ the entire national infrastructure up to the village level,” he stated.

“The target is to ensure that everybody is registered and be able to access healthcare under the Universal Health Care being provided by the national government,” he added.

He spoke as the County government of Homabay rolled out the transition to the new Social Health Authority (SHA) and its programs.

Over the next 10 days, the County will conduct a countywide Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) to ensure every resident understands SHA’s transformative health benefits.

Through town hall meetings, community gatherings, and direct outreach by our leaders, the governor Gladys Wanga led administration aims to reach every household, educating residents on SHA registration, health insurance benefits, and access to primary care and critical health services, underscoring our commitment to achieving universal health coverage for our residents.

“As the country transitions to the Social Health Authority health insurance system, Homa Bay County is making significant progress at an accelerated pace,” said the first term county boss.

“The Social Health Authority ensures that every resident in Kenya can access a comprehensive range of quality health services without the burden of financial hardship. This initiative aims to create a healthier, more equitable future for everyone by providing comprehensive coverage and quality care without financial worry.”
