Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Labour and Social Protection Alfred Mutua, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States (US) department of labour.
The agreement marks a significant step towards strengthening labour cooperation between Kenya and the US.
“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to enhancing labour standards, protecting workers’ rights, and fostering inclusive economic development,” said Mutua.
The MoU, Mutua added, covers several key areas including occupational safety, health standards, child labour and forced labour prevention, and frameworks for social protection.
“Our goal with this agreement is to prioritise occupational health and safety, ensuring a healthier and safer working environment for all Kenyan workers. This MoU aligns with our commitment to robust social protections, enhancing productivity, and promoting decent work,” the former Machakos governor said.
The agreement also addresses crucial systems to support workers’ compensation, and unemployment insurance, which are vital for sustainable economic growth.
He added, “I believe that empowered workers are productive workers, and this partnership will contribute to a stronger labour force.”
The US delegation was led by Thea Mei Lee, Deputy Undersecretary for the Bureau of International Labour Affairs, who emphasised the importance of workers’ rights as a cornerstone of a functioning democracy.
She commended the Country’s proactive approach and emphasised that fair labour or practices are essential to supporting democratic values.
Both nations pledged to uphold internationally recognized labour rights, reinforcing the mutual goals for equitable and sustainable labour standards.
