Kisumu governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) acting party leader.

Nyong’o, the founding ODM Secretary General was appointed interim party leader during the orange party’s central committee meeting held on Wednesday, in Nairobi.

The meeting was chaired by Odinga, who is expected to fully concentrate on campaigns for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship post.

Addressing the press, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna who doubles up as ODM Secretary General, said Nyong’o will chair central committee meetings, among other roles and responsibilities during Odinga’s absence.

“That in light of the gruelling campaign schedule by our Party leader and the need for him to focus on this, he has designated H.E Peter Anyang Nyong’o, the Kisumu governor to chair any and such meetings of the Central committee that may become necessary during periods of his absence.”

Elections for the AUC chairmanship will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February 2025.

Raila settled on Nyong’o, ahead of other party stalwarts, such as Siaya governor James Orengo, Homabay county boss, Gladys Wanga, Kisii’s Paul Simba Arati and Sifuna.

Some of the party’s youthful supporters were vouching for Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino to take up the role.
