Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) staff, and Kakamega locals have been encouraged to join the Wevarsity Sacco, for access to loans, to fund personal development projects.

Speaking during the official launch of the 2024 Akiba Derby Tournament at the institution’s grounds on Wednesday, MMUST Vice Chancellor Professor Solomon Igosangwa Shibairo said one can only turn around his or her economic fortunes, through saving and investing.

“The aim of this tournament is to use the platform to inform people about saving through the Wevarsity Sacco. If you start saving and investing now, you will not have any trouble when the time for retirement comes,” he said.

“I urge MMUST staff and neighbours such as boda boda riders to join this Sacco.”

On his part, Wevarsity acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dalmus Wala said their aim is to hit 5,000 members from the current 2,000 by 2027.

Any Kenyan willing to join the Sacco, Wala added, is free to do so.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to inclusivity, allowing more individuals to benefit from the financial services we offer and to join a community built on mutual support and growth,” added the CEO, his sentiments being echoed by the Chairperson, Chrisandus Wanjala Nakitare.

“I am thrilled to announce that Wevarsity SACCO is officially opening its membership to the public. This initiative reflects our commitment to inclusivity, allowing more individuals to benefit from the financial services we offer, and to join a community built on mutual support and growth,” stated Nakitare.

“We are also here to launch our new Piki Piki loan product. This innovative product is designed to support individuals looking to invest in motorcycle taxis, which have become a vital means of transportation in our region. We want to help them grow economically by giving them affordable credit and enable them to own their own motorcycles.”

According to Kakamega County bodaboda chairman Justus Musungu, their goals and those of Wevarsity are compatible.

He urged his colleagues to join the Sacco in droves, so as to benefit from the newly launched Piki Piki loan product.

“We are using motorbikes to earn a living. The Piki Piki loan product will enable us to own motorcycles.  Let us join this Sacco and end the mentality of selling land to buy motorcycles,” stated Musungu.

The Sacco's assets base has over the years expanded to Sh500 million, reflecting the collective effort and dedication of every member and staff.

Wevarsity Sacco is celebrating 20 years since inception, with the highlight being the three-day Akiba Derby Tournament.

Teams such as KUSU, Wevarsity, KUDHEIHA, UASU, Water Project and bodaboda are battling for football and netball honours.
