Kisumu County has won the bid to host the prestigious United Nations World Tourism Day (UNWTD), and the Kenya Tourism Week 2024.

The event, scheduled for 23rd to 27th September, 2024 will feature a range of activities including Lake tourism, peace initiatives, environmental conservation, sector exhibitions, workshops and seminars, cultural showcases, youth-focused engagements, and a grand networking gala dinner.

Award ceremonies will also be held to recognize key players and innovations within the tourism sector.

Lakeside County came out on top, after the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife invited all 47 County Governments to submit their bids for hosting the globally recognized celebration.

The theme 'Tourism and Peace' will be aligned with global efforts to use tourism as a tool for fostering harmony and development.

Kisumu’s hosting of UNWTD is expected to draw participants and visitors from across the country, promoting the county as a leading tourism destination and a hub for sustainable practices.

The event will not only celebrate tourism’s role in promoting peace but will also focus on sustainable development, environmental conservation, and youth empowerment, making it a landmark occasion for Kisumu and the entire region.

This win adds to Kisumu’s growing list of achievements as a host of major events, positioning the city as a vibrant and attractive destination for both local and international tourists.

Under governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, the County recently hosted the Festac Festival on the backdrop of the successful Africities Summit in 2022.
