Four coast guard officers have been rescued, after a patrol boat they were traveling in capsized in Lake Victoria on Friday night.
The Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS) in a social media update said the successful search and rescue operation was conducted by the KCGS team in collaboration with Beach Management Units (BMU) and the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officers at Ndere Islands, in Lake Victoria.
“After an intensive 8-hour night mission, the team safely recovered four KCGS officers following the capsizing of their patrol boat due to mechanical issues leading to sudden water ingress and subsequent capsizing.”
The officers, KCGS said, were returning back to their Kisumu station, after successfully conducting security patrols in Siaya and Homabay general area of operation.
All officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.
The mission was successful owing to the swift coordination among the BMUs and agencies involved. The search for the boat wreckage continues.
In addition, KCGS emphasized the vital role that teamwork plays in ensuring the safety of maritime personnel and waters.
Meanwhile, KCGS Director General Bruno Shioso today had the incredible opportunity to visit and engage with the dedicated officers at Kisumu Coast Guard Station.
“Your commitment to service delivery is not just commendable; it's a shining example of how passion and teamwork can drive positive change in our workstations,” said the former Police Spokesman.
The session was filled with meaningful conversations, where ideas flowed and experiences shared.
